World Book Day

We have another busy half term.
Our new topic is France so the children will be thinking about how we could travel there and what we might see and do when we got there. We will also be using our e-mail skills to contact children in France. In science we will be making simple circuits.
Dates for you diary -
World book day is on Thursday March 1st. The children can come into school dressed as their favourite character from a book but sensible shoes are still really important please.
Friends of Howes are hosting race night on Friday March 2nd - please come along and support what promises to be a really enjoyable evening. Tickets can be bought from school.
On the 14th of March the whole school is having a maths buzz day where the children will be challenged to solve problems and enjoy using their maths skills.

Parents' evenings are on Tuesday the 27th and Wednesday the 28th of March. Time slots will be given nearer the time.

On Friday the 23rd year 2 are taking part in a Morning of Music held for the first time at Howes. Three other schools will be joining us for a morning full of music and songs to do with our theme of transport.

As Easter approaches, the children will have the opportunity to try their hands at egg decorating in the week beginning 2nd April. More details nearer the time.

Term ends for the children on Wednesday April 3rd.

Yr 2's Trip to the Coventry Transport Museum

Year 2 had a great day at the Transport Museum learning all about cars, bikes and the history of transport. We even had a ride on a simulator of the land-speed record breaking vehicle. All the children had a fantastic day learning and having a really fun time.

Clubs and trips

Clubs are up and running for this term.

There is a great selection to choose from both after school and during lunchtime.

Letters have been sent home with the children.

Some clubs do have a small cost to cover expenses so be sure to check.

Remember to bring back all permission slips for our trip to the Partnership centre please as soon as possible.

There is no charge for this trip.

The children will be back at school in time for lunch so there is no need to send in any packed lunches.

Global Curriculum

Year 2 are thinking about how other people live around the world. This includes different cultures, religious beliefs and every day life.

Any pictures or objects that the children could bring in to school to share their experiences would be greatly appreciated.

maths

In maths this term we are learning about place value, tens and units and how to use a 100 square to help us.
We are also focusing on the 2, 5 and 10 x tables.
If you could help your child at home with their tables that would be really appreciated.

I will be sending you a link to Education City shortly, where you can find lots of helpful ideas to support your child.

Literacy

We have a writing room, reading corner and literacy area in the classroom where the children can enjoy and share their ideas and learning.
This term we are writing stories based on familiar settings and learning how to follow, read and write instructions.

It would help your child with their literacy work if you could find reasons for them to write.
This could include shopping lists, thank you letters, e-mails, texts or stories.
When they do write they need to use a pencil and not a pen and use correctly formed letters. If you would like a copy of the script we use at school I would be more than happy to get you one.

Castles.

This half term year 2 are learning all about castles.

We will be visiting Kenilworth Castle on 27/9/11. Letters have already been sent home with your child. Please return the permission slip and payment as soon as possible to Mrs. Pilling.
